The need to recognise technicians has become increasingly important and DAF Trucks is placing greater significance on DAF Heroes this year; designed as a challenging, educational and fun initiative to demonstrate the company’s deep appreciation for its technical workforce.

Incorporating a competitive element, technicians will answer online questions on current workshop trends and practices, and covering the entire DAF range, both old and new.

Participants are separated into four leagues which are updated throughout the year. Four distinct skill levels have been devised to reflect stages of development and to attract engagement across the network’s demographic. Spot prizes are awarded throughout the programme, with further rewards for DAF Dealers with the highest engagement. The live UK final will be hosted at DAF Trucks in Haddenham at the end of 2023 where the top three winners from each skill level will compete to become DAF UK Technician of the Year. The winner – who will receive a cheque for £2,000 – goes through to compete in the DAF European Technician of the Year in Eindhoven in April 2024.

The need to recognise technicians has become increasingly important and DAF Trucks is placing greater significance on DAF Heroes this year.

“DAF Heroes is about recognising the truly heroic role that our DAF Technicians play,” said Ian Grant, Aftersales Director at DAF Trucks, “During the pandemic, our technicians were, quite rightly, lauded for their selfless effort in ensuring the wheels, literally, kept turning for essential services. For our customers and for all of us who depend on the goods that trucks deliver every day, our DAF Technicians are the real heroes, often going above their regular duties. That dedication,” he said, “remains today for all our customers, with DAF Heroes representing a competitive and rewarding challenge that demonstrates the company’s respect and appreciation for the team.

“A technical trade at DAF Trucks is a solid career choice,” added Grant, “2023 represents a fantastic opportunity to enter the industry, with electrification and abundant new technologies offering a huge range of options. I believe there’s a wealth of skilled people in this country; and I also believe many simply haven’t found their vocation. DAF Trucks can offer a huge range of job opportunities within a multi-discipline organisation.”

‘Made for DAF’
DAF Trucks also promotes upskilling through its ‘Made for DAF’ campaign, a pan-European initiative to encourage technically-minded people to join the truck industry. DAF’s current focus is on car and van technicians and to encourage them to switch to a career within the heavy truck industry; a key differentiator between the industries is that truck technicians can expect a higher salary than their car / van counterparts.

Apprentices
For young people, DAF Trucks also sets the standard for attracting school-leavers to the truck industry. The DAF Apprenticeship programme is currently delivering dedicated learning to approximately 400 young people on three-year apprenticeships covering Parts, Service and related management courses. Apprenticeships are managed at the DAF Academy based at Bristol College and with placements throughout DAF Trucks 137-point UK dealer network.
